Telephone triage nurses’ responsibilities are to answer phone calls from clients who have questions regarding medical needs. Telephone triage nurses will speak with each client and assess the situation telephonically with no hands-on assessment. The client must give all the information they can for the nurse to decide on what advice to give.
Telephone triage nurses can make conscious decisions based on information that is gathered from the client. This information includes but not limited to name, DOB, sex, height, weight and medications. For the nurse to recommend care and how to receive care the other information will include but not limited to symptoms, any current health issues and past medical and surgical history are.
After gathering all the above information, the nurse can recommend services which can help aide the client in their situation. The nurse can recommend information listed for the specific situation or recommended contacting the primary doctor, go to the urgent care or hospital. We can recommend additional resources as well.
An example of phone calls we receive are: If there is a patient who is experiencing a headache from a fall or pain in their body from a fall, the client would be advised to go to the hospital. On another note, if the patient has arthritis and other joint pain then there can be other recommendations and a follow up with their doctor. Another type of call can be how to take medications for constipation because the label is hidden.
We also have a network of physicians who we can refer out to of our clients don’t already have a physician. We can also mail and email general information on disease process, medications and other health information to help our clients understand how to care for themselves.
Any and all information listed on this website and obtained through or telephony services by our Triage Nurses are only recommendations unless otherwise indicated that the physician gave a verbal order.
